York County, VirginiaYork County is a county in Virginia located on the Virginia Peninsula near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. The population as of the 2000 consensus is 56,297 people, with 20,000 households, and 15,880 families residing in the county. Nearby counties and cities include Gloucester County, northeast across the York River, Poquoson, to the southeast, Hampton to the south, Newport News to the southwest, James City County, to the west, and Williamsburg, to the west. The small town of Lackey was located in the county but was taken over by the U.S. Navy in World War 1 in an area which is now part of the Naval Weapons Station Yorktown. Yorktown is the county seat with a modest population of 203. Yorktown is part of an important historical area of attractions known as the Historic Triangle of Yorktown, Jamestown and Williamsburg.
