The mission, San Juan Bautista is located here. This mission is how the town began in 1797. The area around the mission was a cattle ranching area. In 1870, the Southern Pacific Railroad came through bypassing San Juan Bautista, causing a decline for the city. Today the community remains a tourist attraction and artist's haven.
